When I was younger I used to listen to music in great detail. I would press my headphones into my ears to try and hear the bassline of Raw Man's 'Lovers'. At the time I didn't know what this sound was, but it was amazing. I had know idea that this beautiful sound was a bass guitar. When I got into music production I of course found out instantly what this sound was. But I sometimes wonder to myself: would I be better of not knowing? At the time I absolutely had no luck finding what it was and it almost became a personal thing only I knew about. I think this hunger for knowledge of what I was hearing is a very powerful thing.
In the film 'Shawshank Redemption' the prisoner, Andy Dufresne, plays an old 12" over the prison intercom for all the prisoners to hear. The narrator, Red (Played by Morgan Freeman), explains how beautiful the Spanish ladies' voice sounded and also how he had no idea what they were singing about. Then he states how he comes to the realization of how he doesn't want to know and how he'd rather it just remain a mystery. When I obtained knowledge of what I was the hairs on my arm stand up in 'Lovers' I was incredibly happy. But at the same time it's like the mystery factor of music was removed a small bit. Almost like my musical childhood was forgotten.
That's what true music is. It's takes your mind to a brand new place.
A song I admire a lot is Daft Punk's 'Beyond'. It's the 9th track of Daft Punk's album 'Random Access Memories'. In the song you hear: ''The song is framed with silence, It speaks of places never seen, your home's a promise long forgotten, It is the birthplace of your dreams''. I think these are very important lyrics. They are a perfect explanation of what the inexplicable side of music is. ''It speaks of places never seen''. An inexplicably powerful song will do this to you. It will create images in your head and bring you to a completely new fresh universe inside your head that no-one else has ever seen, and never will, only you. ''It is the birthplace of your dreams''. When I listened to Raw Man's 'Lovers', the bass kicked in, I was brought to a whole new world. And I tough to myself: I wan't to be part of this. This is what I want to do. I want to become a music producer. Thus, my dreams were born.
